As the bull sale season approaches, effective marketing of your stud Angus bulls is about far more than listing weights and EBVs. It’s about telling a clear, confident story of value that resonates with the right buyers. Commercial producers are looking for genetics that will perform under real-world conditions, lift herd profitability, and deliver consistency year after year. Your marketing should clearly connect these outcomes to your breeding philosophy.
Start by defining your audience. Understanding their location, farm system, and breeding objectives allows you to tailor your message, reduce wasted spend, and build a strong database of current and potential clients.
Then determine what truly sets your stud apart – keeping in mind that commercially run, good fertility or quiet temperament are not points of difference! It may be your history, location, target audience or that you’re just good to do business with. Everyone is unique – you just need to know your ‘why’.
From there consider the channels that will reach your target audience the most. The more refined you can be the more you will save. In this instance I would suggest making the most of the Angus NZ channels – website, magazine, social and newsletters. These offer you a direct link with prospective buyers that are already showing an interest in Angus.
Your catalogue still remains a cornerstone of the sale. It should succinctly explain your breeding focus and how your bulls add value in a commercial system, supported by high-quality photos and videos showing bulls moving naturally in a paddock. Strong visuals build trust before buyers ever step on-farm.
Finally, remember that bull marketing is relationship-driven. This means investing time in your core clients through farm visits, open days, and regular communication outside of just the bull sale period. When buyers believe in both the bulls and the people behind them, bidding becomes a natural decision.
All the best for the year ahead. If you need any help in determining how best to market your bulls this year then there is some limited spots still available with me during March and April. Just click below to book a slot or email marketing@angusnz.com.
