nProve Beef simplifies bull selection

The integration of Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s new nProve Beef tool into their suite of Better Beef Breeding resources is aimed at helping farmers make more informed decisions this bull buying season.

Launched in March, the nProve Beef online tool allows commercial farmers to easily identify stud breeders that rank highly for the traits that matter most to them. It’s a user-friendly way to match breeding decisions with individual farm goals.

Users begin by selecting their breed preference. The information shown for each breed is generated by that breed society’s own genetic evaluation.  Using a series of buttons and slider scales, you can customise what you are looking for in your bull team.

nProve quickly identifies your options nation-wide, ranked by likeness to your selection criteria.

As part of the Informing New Zealand Beef (INZB) programme — a seven-year initiative to drive genetic progress in the beef industry — B+LNZ Genetics have also developed three new beef cattle indexes: Maternal (NZ$Maternal), Terminal (NZ$Terminal) and Beef-on-Dairy (NZ$BeefxDairy) designed for New Zealand’s farming systems.

Dedicated sessions within B+LNZ’s Better Beef Breeding workshops guide farmers on how to use nProve Beef to select genetics that meet their individual breeding objectives. The workshops lead farmers through the process of setting clear breeding goals and using both genetic and structural information to assess sale bulls.

They also provide participants practical knowledge on how to use the selection indexes, confidently interpret bull sale catalogues, and make well-informed decisions.

The nProve Beef tool is available at nprove.nz and dates for the Better Beef Breeding workshops can be found online at beeflambnz.com.events
