As we approach the festive season, I extend warm wishes to you and your loved ones. May this Christmas be filled with joy, laughter, and moments of gratitude. It is a time for reflection, celebration, and positive outlook for the future.
In the spirit of reflection, it’s essential to acknowledge the ongoing issues within the industry. Market fluctuations, environmental concerns, and changing consumer preferences are factors that require careful consideration. As stewards of the land, New Zealand’s farmers play a crucial role in finding sustainable solutions that balance economic prosperity with environmental responsibility. Collaboration and forward-thinking will be key in addressing these challenges and ensuring a thriving future for the beef industry.
As we bid farewell to another eventful year, I am thrilled to share some highlights from the recently concluded No Bull Weekender—an event that truly exemplifies the strength and unity within the AngusNZ breed community. The weekend brought together some of the remarkable women of the AngusNZ breed at Turihaua, Gisborne for an enriching experience filled with knowledge-sharing, engaging speakers, and a unique opportunity to connect with the local stingray population. It was a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines our industry, and the success of the AngusNZ breed this selling season is a proud reflection of our collective efforts in a challenging year.
Despite horrific weather events, labour shortages, rising costs and the general tightening of belts in the rural sector, the AngusNZ breed has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. The successful Autumn and Spring selling seasons of AngusNZ bulls is a credit to the commitment and dedication of our breeders. This achievement underscores the enduring quality and demand for AngusNZ genetics, even in challenging economic times. It’s a testament to the trust that buyers place in the AngusNZ breed and the ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance the breed’s standards.
Looking forward, the anticipation grows for the agricultural direction that will be undertaken by the new coalition government. The rural sector eagerly awaits policy decisions that will help shape the future of farming in New Zealand. While navigating uncertainties, there is cautious optimism that the new government will foster a healthier business environment, one that supports sustainable agriculture and addresses the unique challenges faced by our farmers.
As we step into the new year, together, we can face challenges head-on, embrace opportunities for growth, and contribute to the continued success of the AngusNZ breed and the New Zealand beef industry.
Wishing you a joyful festive season and a prosperous New Year.
Warm regards,
Mike Smith
President AngusNZ
