Report:

On the first day of the show there were four beef rings in operation with large numbers of cattle from fifteen different breeds. There was a strong number of youth’s helping exhibitors in all breeds with all aspects of cattle preparation, leading and presenting cattle for judging. Youth members made their annual Wednesday night BBQ their own with steak sausages and a few salads tossed in for good measure filling the hunger pains for those who missed out on lunch. I would like to thank Canterbury and NZ Angus associations for sponsoring the BBQ and creating the opportunity

for some of the older generation to socialize and share some of their vast knowledge with our age group. This provided an occasion where beef and dairy handlers from all over the countryside with different agricultural backgrounds to get to know each other and share common interest. Ssome played cards, others turned the judging ring into a soccer field while others cooked the meats.

The second day of the show saw an early start for youth members helping prepare the cattle for the days’ events. Most eagerly awaited event was the herdsperson competition. Presentation was an impeccably high standard from all age groups. There were three sections novice 8 to 13 years, junior under 17 and senior 17 to 24 years of age. With judging for this event starting at 1pm and running through till 5pm with a cattle parade in between events, it made for a long day with some of the best support coming from fellow competitors.

Animal presentation and knowledge of both breed and beef industry were judged. This was a good experience for all those participating regardless of where they were in the line up. Judges of the youth event gave positive feedback support and encouraging suggestion for improvement for future shows. After the cattle parade the youth stock judging was held and although it didn’t attract as many entries as the handler’s competition it was still fiercely contended. WE would like to congratulate all winners.

The third day brought everyone back to the ring for the all breeds competition. It was a tough competition to judge with all the animals presented immaculately and large numbers making a real spectacle for the public to watch. The days finish with a grand parade in the rain. It is always sad to see the end of a show but with new friendships made and knowledge leant means next years show will be bigger and better.

I would like to thank Canterbury A&P and the Royal Society for a well organised show and hope next years youth show will be seen as an important part of the development of the royal society with a social occasion where the youth can relax and get to know each other.

Sincerely,
Hazel and Marie Timperley
