2006 Royal Show Report

The crowds rolled out for the Royal Show in Christchurch last year, the level of support
testimony to the decision that Canterbury would host the Royal for the next three years. Urban and
rural, young and old, all mingle to enjoy the iconic occasion of the A&P Show. And nowhere does it better than Canterbury.

Hospitality in the ‘FMG Angus’ tent was an added bonus for the Angus world. Bruce Johns and Jennie Smith’s ward team ensured that food and refreshments were always on hand and their hard work ensured the tent was well patronized.

Despite the demands of being head steward for the entire cattle section, Peter Gardner still found time to lead the occasional heifer, bull or calf in the ring. His double duty paid off with Colenso stud winning the Angus breed championship with a stunning 2 yr old with her first calf at foot, also placed second in the Meat and Wool Cup.

Judge Richard Rowe commented that Angus exhibitors did the breed proud. “The display of black cattle in the grand parade looked awesome and created quite a discussion in the members stand. They were a very good group of cattle, extremely well presented. Of particular note was the yearling bull presented by Jane Jenkins which competed very well in the Interbreed and Allbreeds classes.”

Great youth turn-out

Angus Youth at Royal Show

A feature at Christchurch was the emphasis on the involvement of young people in the industry.

“One of the highlights of the show,” said judge Richard Rowe, “was the sight of so many young, enthusiastic leaders of cattle going about their business in such a professional manner. The leading and presentation of the cattle has improved immensely in recent years, and all are to be commended.”

The first day of the show saw four beef rings in operation, with large numbers of cattle from fifteen different breeds. Young people were much in evidence, helping with all aspects of cattle preparation, leading and presentation. The annual Wednesday night Youth BBQ, sponsored by Canterbury and NZ Angus Associations, was a roaring success and provided an opportunity for some of the older generation to socialize and share their knowledge with younger members.

The herdsperson competition on day two saw strong competition and high standards set. There were three sections: novice (8-13 yrs), junior (under 17), and senior (17-24 yrs). Judging started at 1pm, running through to 5pm with a cattle parade between events. It was a long day, made easier by the support offered between competitors. Animal presentation and knowledge of both breed and beef industry were judged. This was a good experience for all those participating regardless of where they were in the line-up. Judges of the youth event gave positive feedback and encouraging suggestions for improvement for future shows.

After the cattle parade the youth stock judging was held and although it didn’t attract as many entries as the handler’s competition it was still fiercely contended.

Despite changing times, last year’s Royal made it quite clear that the A&P Show remains an important and respected event in the agricultural calendar.

Legend of the Show: Harley Jenkins

A further highlight of the three day event was the honouring of respected Angus breeder Harley Jenkins who, in recognition of the lifetime of support he has given the Canterbury Show, received a ‘Show Legend’ Award.

The award was introduced in 2004 and is now an annual highlight. It recognises outstanding voluntary services to the Show and Canterbury A&P Association, noting attributes such as professionalism, personality, commitment, camaraderie and a contribution above and beyond the call of duty.

Harley, founder of the Floridale Angus Stud, has been a contributor to the show for over 50 continuous years, and he and wife Peggy will no doubt continue to be keen supporters of the show for years to come.
