Angus Judge – Neil Kjestrup
Superb weather was to be of the order of the day for the entire three days of the 2008 Royal Show, a stark contrast to last year.
Partnered by the Canterbury/Westland Ward the NZ Angus flag was again flying in support of the five breeding members who brought an excellent group of cattle forward to represent the Angus breed at this Royal Event.
During the three days at the show the FMG/NZAA combined tent was prominently placed on the Cattle Lawn beside the cattle show rings for our members and exhibitors to take advantage of.
On behalf of the NZ Angus Association the Canterbury/Westland Ward members hosted the tent and it would be remiss not to mention the sterling work done by a number of their members in making this event the success that it was. Nancy & Peter Gardner, Peggy, Harley & Wendy Jenkins, Sue & Gerald Hargreaves, Bruce Alexander, Audrey & Bruce Johns , Andrew & Udett Stokes, Linda and Clarence Timperley, Susan and Roger Hayward. They did a fantastic job that was enjoyed and appreciated by everyone, thank you.
Exhibiting with us this year was FMG, our major national sponsorship partner and supporting our exhibitors in the ring were Five Star Beef, Xcell Breeding Services, Martin Hamer of Embryo Co, Jordan Nurseries,Whisky Galore and Merial/Ancare as sponsors of all the Angus classes on the first day.
Our sincere thanks go to them all for their generous support, it is their generosity that often encourages participation by exhibitors in these events so it is important that people appreciate and support those who support us.
Day 1 on the Wednesday is the ‘breed specific day’ and for our Angus exhibitors it is the day they go up against each other to compete to see who has the animal that will eventually be crowned the Supreme Champion Angus. The strength of the competition was evidenced in the spread of the various class winners and placings as the awards were shared around, leading finally to the selection by our judges of the 2008 Royal Show Supreme Champion Angus in Floridale Vanity 57 and her calf from the Floridale Angus Stud of Jane Jenkins.
25 animals from five Angus studs competing in 27 classes supported by 8 sponsors and the RAS.had created a wonderful atmosphere and a great spectacle or all those interested spectators.
Congratulations to all of our Angus exhibitors, the team that they brought to the Royal this year was a credit to you all.
