REGULATIONS APPLICABLE TO ARTIFICIAL BREEDING
This section details the regulations applying to collection,
use and/or sale of genetic material. For Rules regarding the importation
or export of genetic material see Section 6.
5.1 Collection of genetic material
A bull in New Zealand from which semen is to be drawn and offered for
sale must first be tested normal for the Mannosidosis genotype and any
other genetic disorder that may be stipulated by the Council from time
to time. The bull must then be approved by TWO inspectors who will complete
a classification report in the form provided by the Association, copies
of which will be available on request.
Semen collection for sale must be carried out by qualified persons at
a recognised collection centre.
Semen or other genetic material may be collected by a technician on the
property of the owner, only for use within the owner's herd.
If a Breeder draws semen from a bull for use solely within their own herd
, then no Mannosidosis or other genetic test shall be required, nor is
a classification report by two inspectors necessary. A bull that has been
refused a license for Artificial Breeding may still be used within the
owner's herd.
5.2 Use of genetic material.
No semen drawn from an animal born prior to and inclusive of the 1980
calving year may be used in a registered herd except where that animal
can be shown to have been tested normal for the mannosidosis genotype
or from a herd accredited exempt from mannosidosis for the 1979 and 1980
calving years.
Proper records must be kept of details of artificial breeding activities.
These shall include semen identification, all insemination dates, identification
of inseminated cows, dates of embryo recovery and transplantation and
recipient and donor identification. These records must be available to
the Registrar on request.
No cow which has been artificially inseminated shall be run with a bull
or artificially inseminated with semen from any other bull within 21 days
of a previous insemination, except where the Breeder undertakes to have
the parentage of resultant progeny verified at his/her own expense should
any doubt arise as to the sire of the calf.
A fee is payable on each animal got by AI and registered as produce with
the Association. This is in addition to the Pre List Dam Fee.
5.3 Sale of genetic material
All semen contracts, fees and arrangements must be made between the vendor
and the purchaser, and the Association shall bear no responsibility in
this regard.
Notice of sale of frozen embryo or live recipient dams must be lodged
with the Registrar within one month of sale.
5.4 Recording of calves got by Artificial Insemination
All animals got by artificial insemination must have the fact recorded
in the herd book by the letters AB.
When submitting Calf Entry Returns for calves got by Artificial insemination
the Breeder must:
> Attach completed Insemination Certificate to the Calf Entry Form.
> Put AB after the calf's name.
> All AB calves must have exact calving date shown.
5.5 Registration Requirements for Embryo Transplant
A DNA profile must be obtained for both donor dam and sire. The Registrar
may request these certificates following confirmation of pregnancy.
When submitting Calf Entry Returns for calves got by ET the Breeder must
:
> Attach completed ET Certificate to the Calf Entry Form
> Attach DNA profiles to the Calf Entry Form unless such DNA profiles
have previously been lodged with the Registrar.
> Put ET after the calf's name.
A fee is payable on each animal got by ET and registered as produce with
the Association. This is in addition to the Pre-list Dam Fee.
